R: THE NUTHGNAWERS ARE COMING! GLI NUTHGNAWERS STANNO ARRIVANDO!

    Compared to the times I had planned, the work on my project of the band of dogmen suffers a considerable delay due to the difficulty of obtaining some materials, both because they are rare and because supplies are slowed down by the emergency we are experiencing. The patience normally necessary for this hobby must be exercised even in these long waits ...
    However, the design phase has been actively progressing, and in order not to let the month of April pass without any news, I want to at least offer some preview photos of how the project should be carried out. Using a lot of cardboard to replace missing shields and bases, as well as some miniatures that I have yet to purchase but have already decided on the placement, here's how the unit should be presented.

The band will consist of 24 miniatures with 25x25 mm bases, for unit dimensions of 9 bases wide and 3 bases deep. In the rear left corner the space of four bases will instead be occupied by a unity filler with a larger figure, which at the moment I do not want to reveal. Since gnolls with more dog features are quite rare, I have put together 3 different sets of miniatures, which I think complement each other. In addition to the group I had already owned for some time of 4 dogmen from Alternative Armies, slightly smaller in size, I bought another 4 dogmen from the same company, which are larger, but seem to me clearly inspired by the precedents in weapons and clothing, and are therefore compatible.

                                

                                

    The bulk, however, is made up of the 14 Citadel gnolls sculpted by Jes Goodwin (I currently own 9 of them), plus a slightly slimmer gnoll, equally Citadel but part of the Dungeon Monsters set.

          

                                 

    The difference in size between these groups is not in my opinion a problem, because in any case within this breed, changed by chaos, there can be larger and smaller specimens - in the same way as dogs, after all. Indeed, these differences in size can be useful in establishing a hierarchy within the raiding group, as happens in an animal pack, but also according to what happens between the gnolls of AD&D and the beastmen of Warhammer. From the perspective point of view, then, I tried to mix the models of various producers and to place the smaller ones in high positions or that in any case did not make the difference in height stand out too much.
    One difficulty in unifying the 3 sets and "normalizing" them to make them a playable unit of WHFB or T9A are the bases: while the Citadel gnolls have the tab to be inserted into a classic plastic base, the other two groups have integrated metal bases - among other things of different size and thickness! Therefore, it will be necessary to insert them in inverted bases to make them similar to the others. Unfortunately for now I have only managed to get two, but I hope that the others will not be long in coming.
    We will have the opportunity to talk about the name I chose for the band in a future post ....

    Rispetto ai tempi che avevo programmato, il lavoro sul mio progetto delle banda di uomini-cane sconta un notevole ritardo dovuto alla difficoltà di procurarsi alcuni materiali, sia perchè rari, sia perchè le forniture sono rallentate dall'emergenza che stiamo vivendo. La pazienza necessaria normalmente a questo hobby va esercitata anche in queste lunghe attese...
    La fase progettuale è comunque andata avanti attivamente, e per non lasciar passare il mese di aprile senza alcuna notizia, voglio almeno offrire qualche foto in anteprima di come il progetto dovrebbe essere realizzato. Usando molto cartone per sostituire scudi e basette mancanti, come anche alcune miniature che devo ancora acquistare ma di cui ho già deciso la collocazione, ecco come si dovrebbe presentare l'unità.

    La banda sarà composta da 24 miniature con basi di mm 25x25, per dimensioni dell'unità di 9 basi di larghezza e 3 basi di profondità. Nell'angolo posteriore a sinistra lo spazio di quattro basette sarà invece occupato da uno unity filler con una figura di maggiori dimensioni, che al momento non voglio svelare.     Poiché gli gnoll con fattezze più canine sono abbastanza rari, ho messo assieme 3 diversi insiemi di miniature, che a mio avviso si integrano tra loro. Oltre al gruppo che già possedevo da tempo di 4 uomini-cane di Alternative Armies, di dimensioni leggermente più piccole, ho acquistato altri 4 uomini-cane della stessa ditta, che sono più grandi, ma mi sembrano chiaramente ispirati ai precedenti nelle armi e nell'abbigliamento, e che quindi sono compatibili. 

Il grosso, tuttavia, è composto dai 14 gnolls Citadel scolpiti da Jes Goodwin (al momento ne possiedo 9), cui si aggiunge uno gnoll leggermente più esile, ugualmente Citadel ma facente parte del Dungeon Monsters set. 

    La differenza di dimensioni tra questi gruppi non è a mio avviso un problema, perché comunque all'interno di questa razza, mutata dal caos, possono trovarsi esemplari di taglia più grande ed esemplari più piccoli - allo stesso modo dei cani, in fondo. Anzi, queste differenze di dimensioni possono tornare utili per stabilire una gerarchia all'interno del gruppo di razziatori, come accade in un branco animale, ma anche secondo quanto succede tra gli gnoll di AD&D e gli uomini bestia di Warhammer. Dal punto di vista prospettico, poi, ho cercato di mescolare i modelli delle diverse ditte e di porre quelli più piccoli in posizioni elevate o che comunque non facessero troppo risaltare la differenza di statura.

    Una difficoltà a uniformare i 3 insiemi e a "normalizzarli" per renderli un'unità giocabile di WHFB o di T9A sono le basi: mentre gli gnoll Citadel hanno la linguetta da inserire in una classica base di plastica, gli altri due gruppi hanno basi in metallo integrate - tra l'altro di dimensioni e spessore diversi tra loro! Sarà quindi necessario inserirle in basi invertite per renderle analoghe agli altri. Purtroppo sono per ora riuscito a procurarmene solo due, ma spero che le altre non tardino ad arrivare.

    Del nome che ho scelto per la banda avremo invece modo di riparlare in un prossimo post....
