Uncertain paternity?

    I had already tried in a previous post to find some reliable information about the year of production and the identity of the miniatures of dogmen by Alternative Armies, corresponding to the codes OH6: Dogman warriors and OH16: Dogman elites. They consist of two sets, each made up of four miniatures, which have different size and style, but which seem to share similar clothing and equipment.

    I asked Gavin Syme of AA, who kindly informed me that OH6 dates from 1990, while OH16 dates from 1993, and both were originally labeled "Weremen". He also specified that the two sets were not made by the same sculptor but he assumes that OH6 can be attributed to the hand of Bob Olley - although information on this aspect is no longer available in the manufacturer's archive.

    That only three years elapsed between the production of the first and second groups is a little puzzling to me, as the OH6 dogmen appear much more 'old-fashioned' and smaller in size than their OH16 comrades.

 Looking closer at the miniatures - really a stroke of genius, right? -  I saw that the OH16 dogmen are lucky enough to have an inscription engraved under the base bearing the date 1991 and the abbreviated name "Phil." or "Phil. L.".

    It can therefore be said that these pieces were actually sculpted in 1991, although they were then put into production and marketed in 1993 according to what Syme told me. This would bring them even closer over time to those of OH6, making the two sets almost contemporary.

    For the sculptor's name, one clearly recognizes that of Phil Lewis, known for his collaboration with Games Workshop in the 1980s in the roles of photographer, painter and sculptor, as is well reconstructed in the interview made with him by Orlygg almost ten years ago. In addition to design some iconic Citadel sets ("The Chaos All-Stars"), he then sculpted fantasy miniatures for other manufacturers such as Heartbreaker and Alternative Armies, and more recently (under the nickname of Techno) devoted himself to historical figures in lesser scale for Pendraken Miniatures.

    Since they do not have any explanatory writing, the other four dogmen (OH6) would remain a puzzle, if browsing the web I had not found a valuable supplementary indication.  But I'll write about this in the next post; for the moment I give only a clue ...

Paternità incerta?

    Avevo già tentato in un post precedente di ricavare qualche elemento sicuro circa l'anno di produzione e l'identità delle miniature di uomini cane di Alternative Armies, corrispondenti ai codici OH6: Dogman warriors e OH16: Dogman elites.  Esse sono costituite da due gruppi di quattro miniature di dimensioni e stile diversi, ma che sembrano avere similitudini nell'abbigliamento e nell'equipaggiamento.

    Mi sono rivolto a Gavin Syme di AA, che mi ha gentilmente comunicato che OH6 risale al 1990, mentre OH16 al 1993, ed entrambi in origine erano etichettati come "Weremen". Egli ha inoltre precisato che i due set non sono stati realizzati dallo stesso scultore, ma ipotizza che OH6 possa essere ricondotto alla mano di Bob Olley - sebbene non siano più disponibili informazioni su questo aspetto nell'archivio della ditta.

    Che tra la realizzazione del primo e quella del secondo gruppo fossero trascorsi soltanto tre anni mi è apparso un po' sorprendente, visto che gli uomini cane di OH6 appaiono molto più 'vecchio stile' e di dimensioni più ridotte rispetto ai loro compagni di OH16.

    

I dogmen di Phil Lewis   

 Osservando meglio le miniature - davvero un colpo di genio, giusto?! -  ho visto che gli uomini cane OH16 hanno la fortuna di avere una scritta incisa sotto la base che riporta la data 1991 e il nome abbreviato "Phil." o "Phil. L.".

    Si può di conseguenza affermare che questi pezzi furono effettivamente scolpiti nel 1991, anche se poi messi in produzione e in commercio nel 1993 stando a quello che Syme mi ha riferito. Ciò li avvicinerebbe ancora di più nel tempo a quelli di OH6, rendendo i due set quasi contemporanei. 

Per il nome dello scultore, si riconosce chiaramente quello di Phil Lewis, noto per la sua collaborazione con la Games Workshop negli anni Ottanta nei ruoli di fotografo, pittore e scultore, come è ben ricostruito nell'intervista fattagli da Orlygg quasi dieci anni fa. Oltre ad aver realizzato alcuni iconici set Citadel ("The Chaos All-Stars"), ha poi scolpito miniature fantasy per altri produttori come Heartbreaker e Alternative Armies, e più di recente (con il soprannome di Techno) si è dedicato a figure storiche in scala minore per Pendraken Miniatures.

    Dato che non sono dotati di nessuna scritta esplicativa, gli altri quattro uomini cane (OH6) resterebbero un'incognita, se navigando su internet non avessi trovato una preziosa indicazione supplementare. Di questo scriverò però nel prossimo post; per il momento fornisco soltanto un indizio...
