R: HELLANA GAMES 2023

    The XXI edition of the wargames and board games event called HELLANA GAMES, organized in Tuscany by the Gruppo Ludico Aglianese, took place on Sunday 2 April. Last year I had attended it with D and her mother (see the post here). This year D was busy and G, my wife, was careful not to come with me, given her well-known lack of sympathy for the whole world of fantasy and games...

    ...and she was wrong not to - from my point of view of course, not from hers! - because compared to the last edition, which was held in a reduced form due to the pandemic, this year it has taken on a wider guise, both in terms of games and sellers.

    In fact, a second minor space has been added, with demonstrations dedicated to board games (including the new edition of Hero Quest) and a "bring and buy" area, where there could be found several new or already painted miniatures from WHFB.

The inevitable comment of the nostalgic old guard: "How much better was the first edition?!"

    The main room, as usual, housed about fifteen wargame tables in the center and numerous shopkeepers' stalls along the walls, with lots of miniatures and hobby items. For the tables there was plenty of choice between historical, sci-fi and even something fantasy. Probably having more experience than last year, I recognized some games.

    One of the most beautiful tables (which in fact received the "best of show" award) for the quantity of miniatures and for the setting was the one dedicated to the battle of Talavera with the British and Spanish against the French (1809):

"Let's stick it to those frogeaters!"

    But the table centered on Operation Barbarossa, with the crossing of the Bug River on the Russian front (June 22, 1941) was also of sure impact:

"Attack (but without getting wet)!"

    Not to mention the table dedicated to the Vietnam War, and in particular to the movie "Apocalypse Now":

"I love the smell of mininapalm in the morning!"

    For the antiquity, the battle of Ascoli Satriano (279 BC), although essential in setting up the terrain, amazed for the deployment of a large quantity of 28mm miniatures:

And there are also the "boves Lucani"!

    And then feudal Japan with its fantastic architecture...

The usual problem: "Are we all going to get into it?!"

    ...up to the contemporary age with the evacuation of Kabul airport in 2022:

Very nice but - to be honest - playing with it would distress me a bit...

    For the sci-fi universe, a smaller table for WH 40k...

Or at least I guess it's WH 40k...

        ...a table for Battletech...

Hurray! I finally learned what Battletech is (more or less...)

    ...and one for Star Wars:

    Last - and unfortunately also the least - fantasy. It was represented only by a small table with the demonstration of the solo game "9D6 QUEST" by Ganesha games. A small village and its surroundings attacked by goblin wolfriders (GW) and orange trolls (from which manufacturer?):

It's not the quantity but the quality that counts (?)

    In conclusion, it was an interesting event; and this time, away from D's eyes, I even gave in and made some small purchases...

    Domenica 2 aprile si è svolta la XXI edizione della manifestazione di wargames e giochi da tavolo chiamata HELLANA GAMES, organizzata in Toscana dal Gruppo Ludico Aglianese. Già lo scorso anno la avevo visitata in compagnia di D e di sua madre (vedi il post qui). Quest'anno D era impegnata e G, mia moglie, si è ben guardata dal venire con me, vista la sua notoria scarsa simpatia per l'intero mondo del fantasy e dei giochi...

    ...e ha fatto male - dal nostro punto di vista ovviamente, non dal suo! - perché rispetto alla scorsa edizione, che si era svolta in forma ridotta a causa della pandemia, quest'anno ha assunto una veste più ampia, per quanto riguarda sia i giochi che i venditori. 

    Si è infatti aggiunto un secondo spazio minore, comprendente dimostrazioni dedicate ai giochi da tavolo (inclusa la nuova edizione di Hero Quest) e un'area "bring and buy", dove si potevano trovare diverse miniature nuove o già dipinte di WHFB.

L'inevitabile commento del vecchio nostalgico: "Ma quanto era meglio la prima edizione?!"

    La sala principale, come al solito, ospitava al centro una quindicina di tavoli da wargame e lungo le pareti numerosi banchi di negozianti, con tantissime miniature e articoli per l'hobby. Per i tavoli c'era l'imbarazzo della scelta tra storico, sci-fi e anche qualcosa di fantasy. Probabilmente avendo una maggior esperienza rispetto all'anno scorso, ho riconosciuto alcuni giochi.

    Uno dei tavoli più belli (che ha infatti ricevuto il premio "best of show") per la quantità di miniature e per l'ambientazione è stato quello dedicato alla battaglia di Talavera, con Britannici e Spagnoli contro i Francesi (1809):

"Facciamogliela vedere a quei mangiaranocchie!"

    Ma anche il tavolo incentrato sull'Operazione Barbarossa, con l'attraversamento del fiume Bug sul fronte russo (22 giugno 1941) era di sicuro impatto:

"All'attacco (ma senza bagnarci)!"

    Per non parlare del tavolo dedicato alla guerra del Vietnam, e in particolare al film "Apocalypse Now":

"Amo l'odore del mininapalm la mattina!"

    Per l'età antica, la battaglia di Ascoli Satriano (279 a.C.), sebbene essenziale nell'allestimento del terreno, stupiva per il dispiegamento di una gran quantità di miniature da 28mm:

    E poi il Giappone feudale con le sue fantastiche architetture...

Il solito problema: "Ci entreremo tutti?!"

...fino alla contemporaneità con l'evacuazione dell'aeroporto di Kabul del 2022:

Molto bello, ma - in tutta onestà - giocarci mi angoscerebbe un po'...

Per l'universo sci-fi, un tavolo più piccolo per WH 40k...

O almeno suppongo che sia WH 40k...

...un tavolo di Battletech...

Evviva! Ho finalmente imparato che cos'è Battletech (più o meno...)

    Per ultimo - purtroppo anche in ordine di importanza - il fantasy. Esso era rappresentato solo da un piccolo tavolo con la dimostrazione del gioco in solitario "9D6 QUEST" di Ganesha games. Un piccolo villaggio e i suoi dintorni attaccato da goblin cavalcalupi (GW) e da troll arancioni (di quale produttore?):

Pochi ma buoni (?)

    In conclusione, è stata una manifestazione interessante; e questa volta, lontano dagli occhi di D, ho anche ceduto e ho fatto qualche piccolo acquisto...
