R: GNOLLS AND BEASTMEN/ GNOLL E UOMINI BESTIA

We left off at the dogmen of Alternative Armies and the identity of the gnolls from which they seem to have derived... and whether they can somehow fit into the Warhammer universe. Let's address the issue from both points of view.

Gnolls, yesterday and today

Gnolls are a race classically associated with Dungeons & Dragons, which comes in the form of anthropomorphic hyenas, with well-marked characteristics and society: for a classification, just refer to the relative page of Forgotten Realms. The fact that the gnolls have not always had this aspect, however, we will have the opportunity to talk about soon.

Both in the graphic renditions and in the sculpture of the miniatures of various manufacturers, the physical aspect of a hyena has been increasingly accentuated, with curved backs, protruding eyes, and digitigrade walking. At the same time, and in line with the habitat of this species, the gnoll culture has been turned more and more towards an exotic aspect, made up of stunted clothes, decorations of bones and feathers, both for warriors and for shamans. Here are two examples of images taken from the web:

And here are a couple of miniatures, respectively of Reaper and Legends of Signum:

This more recent trend differs from what gnolls looked like in the 1980s miniatures, made by Citadel and Ral Partha, where instead the gnolls were assigned an intermediate appearance between the dog and the hyena, and with a more European-style clothing and armament, not unlike that of other races, up to a Ral Partha gnoll with a sword, shield and plate armor that would have made a knight envious!

Compared to the historical ones by Ral Partha, the gnoll miniatures I most appreciate are those made by Citadel in the mid-1980s and sculpted by Jes Goodwin, equipped with three different types of weapons (bow, axe and pole weapon) in 14 variants, classified in detail on this page of Otherworld, from which the following image is also taken:

Care in sculpture, more canine features, plantigrade locomotion (and sometimes with the addition of boots), more appropriate clothing and armament distinguish them from the miniatures of other manufacturers, both still active and historical. All of this seems to me to fit well with the AA miniatures - and I would not surprised to learn that the latter were inspired by them. But finding miniatures that could be the older relatives of my four dogmen still leaves unsolved the question of how they fit into the Warhammer races.

Beastmen (and dogmen) in the Warhammer world

For years now the concept of beastman in the Warhammer lore, well before the Age of Sigmar, has become synonymous with mutant beings with features mainly borrowed from a goat (ungors, gors),a bull (minotaurs), or a horse (centigors), completely neglecting beings who could appear, due to the corruption of chaos, hybrids between human beings and other animal species.
However, this has not always been the case. I'll give some examples. In the first story written by  King of the Felix and Gotrek saga, "Geheimnisnacht", the two protagonists face beings of all shapes gathered for a sabbath, including a dogman: Felix "put his blade under the ribs and into the heart of a dog-faced man who leapt at him" (W. King," Trollslayer ", p. 13). Also from a miniature-making perspective, Citadel had made a variety of chaos beastmen, including at least one dog-headed being of Khorne with a tentacle for an arm. Just look at the 1990 catalog page (taken from Stuff of Legends):

or the photos of these miniatures (including the dogman) excellently painted by Nico and visible on his blog Realms of Chaos.

Even one of Marauder's mythical sculptors, Aly Morisson, in his sketchbook had thought of beastmen who were not reduced to goats or cattle, including "dog heads" that never became reality - reproductions of the pages of the notebook are now visible on this blog.

We can therefore conclude that, even if they are not popular, the Warhammer narrative does not exclude that beings contaminated by chaos can present themselves in very different bestial aspects. And this may also depend on the various latitudes at which different animal species can be encountered. Thus, while there is no specific race that can be labeled as gnolls, these latter beings can be made to fall within the multiple forms in which chaos-corrupted beastmen exist. At the limit even hyena men, although they should be located at more southern latitudes than the Old World, which is notoriously the heart of the Warhammer universe. The dogmen, on the other hand, who are those in my miniatures, can fit into a European-type habitat within or on the edge of the Empire itself, which interests me most. It seems to me so consistent that, compared to a society like that of goat-bovine beastmen, where horns determine status, dogmen have tended to form separate self-sufficient groups.

And here is finally found both miniatures that can be added to my small group of dog men, and a frame in which to plausibly place them all in the world of Warhammer. It's time to start thinking about setting up a band of dogmen to run around the Empire!

  1. I think I know you have some of the Citadel ones... let's say at least six of them. I want to see them painted! :)

    1. You must be a skilled wizard to know these GNOLL secrets.
You will see them painted but it will take a little patience as the band of raiders is forming and awaiting new reinforcements!
